Frequent Asked Questions About The Short Inca Trail

Should I Stay in the Sacred Valley Before the Inca Trail?

L
K

Yes, we highly recommend spending the night before your trek in the Sacred Valley, either in Urubamba or Ollantaytambo. This way you’ll be well rested and close to the start of the Short Inca Trail.

Our tours start early, with pick-up times between 4:00 and 4:30 AM, depending on your location. The train to KM 104 leaves from Ollantaytambo at 5:05 AM.

Why Start Early?

Starting early has many advantages:

  • Avoid the crowds – You’ll have a more peaceful, immersive experience by getting ahead of the larger groups.
  • Escape the midday sun – Hiking early means you’ll reach the shaded parts of the trail before the heat hits.
  • Enjoy the forest canopy – Hiking under the cool, misty cloud forest is more comfortable and scenic.

This way you’ll have a quieter, more authentic experience on the Inca Trail — with better light for photos, cooler air and more time to connect with the landscape and Inca history.

What is the best way to get to the Sacred Valley Before the 2 day Inca Trail?

L
K

One of the best ways to get to the Sacred Valley is by joining a Sacred Valley Tour, which allows you to see some of the region’s most important cultural and natural sites before your hike. This full-day tour includes:

  • Chinchero – Traditional weaving village and local market
  • Chinchero Archaeological Site – Agricultural terraces and colonial buildings
  • Maras Salt Mines – Thousands of pre-Incan salt pools are still in use today
  • Moray Circular Terraces – Inca agricultural laboratory

After the tour, spending the night in the Sacred Valley – either in Urubamba or Ollantaytambo – is a big advantage for Short Inca Trail hikers.

Can seniors and small children do the Short Inca Trail?

L
K

The Short Inca Trail is suitable for healthy seniors and children 5 and older, as long as they are active and used to walking. It’s an excellent option for families and older adventurers who want to see Machu Picchu without committing to a multi-day trek.

For Families with Young Children:

  • Children under 5 are not recommended for this hike.
  • If you have toddlers or more minor children, we highly recommend using a baby carrier for trekking.
  • You can also hire a private porter to carry gear or to assist with your child.

For Older Adults:

  • Trekking poles are highly recommended for stability and joint support.
  • Early start means a more relaxed pace and cooler trail conditions.
  • A private tour is highly recommended for older travelers, as it offers a personalized experience with a guide who will tailor the tour to your pace, comfort, and safety.

With proper preparation and the right support, the Short Inca Trail is a fun and safe adventure for everyone

What fitness level is required for the Inca Trail trek?

L
K

Moderate fitness is needed for high-altitude hiking. Luxury amenities provide comfort, but don’t eliminate the physical challenge of trekking 26 miles over four days with altitudes reaching 4,215 meters.

How far in advance should I book my Inca Trail tour?

L
K

Book 4-6 months in advance due to strict permit limits (only 500 people daily, including guides and porters). Peak season (May-September) requires even earlier booking.

What’s the best time of the year for the inca trail hike?

L
K

May through September offers dry weather and the clearest views. Shoulder seasons (April, October) provide fewer crowds, while the winter season (November-March) brings rain but lush cloud forest landscapes.

Can dietary restrictions be accommodated on the Inca treks?
